What is a DVIR?
A Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) is a required document where drivers record the condition of their vehicle before and after trips. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require carriers to maintain DVIRs and address any defects found.
DOT Inspection Requirements
Under FMCSA regulations (49 CFR 396.11), motor carriers must require drivers to prepare a DVIR at the end of each day's work. The report must cover specific components including brakes, steering, lights, tires, horn, windshield wipers, mirrors, coupling devices, wheels, and emergency equipment.
Pre-Trip vs Post-Trip Inspections
- Pre-Trip: Conducted before driving. Ensures the vehicle is safe for the road.
- Post-Trip: Conducted after driving. Documents any issues discovered during the trip.
Benefits of Digital DVIR Software
Paper-based inspection forms are prone to loss, illegible handwriting, and incomplete reporting. Digital DVIR apps like Yard-Mate ensure every inspection is complete, timestamped, and stored securely. Failed items automatically create maintenance work orders, ensuring defects are addressed promptly.
NSC Schedule 1 Compliance
The National Safety Code Schedule 1 outlines minimum inspection standards for commercial vehicles in Canada. Yard-Mate's inspection forms are designed to meet both U.S. FMCSA requirements and Canadian NSC Schedule 1 standards, making it ideal for cross-border carriers.
