Driver Qualification FileDQ File

A federally-required file containing every document needed to prove a CDL driver is legally qualified to operate.

A Driver Qualification (DQ) file is the set of documents 49 CFR 391 requires every motor carrier to keep for each driver. It includes: the application for employment, motor vehicle record (MVR), road test certificate, medical examiner's certificate, drug & alcohol pre-employment test, previous employer inquiries, and annual review of driving record.

The DQ file is what an FMCSA auditor opens first during a compliance review. Missing or incomplete DQ files are one of the most common violations and one of the easiest ways to fail a new-entrant audit.

DQ files are typically maintained for the duration of employment plus three years after termination. Modern fleets keep DQ files digital and audit-ready.
