IFTA filing in South Dakota

If your IFTA license is issued in South Dakota (SD), this is your base jurisdiction. You file one quarterly IFTA return that covers every state and province you drove through, with the South Dakota DOR.

━━ Tax authority

South Dakota DOR

━━ Quarterly deadlines

  • Q1 (Jan–Mar)
    Due April 30
  • Q2 (Apr–Jun)
    Due July 31
  • Q3 (Jul–Sep)
    Due October 31
  • Q4 (Oct–Dec)
    Due January 31

Returns are due even if no fuel was purchased or no miles driven that quarter.

How to file IFTA from South Dakota

  1. Pull total miles driven by jurisdiction for the quarter (from your ELD or trip sheets).
  2. Pull total gallons purchased by jurisdiction (from your fuel receipts).
  3. Calculate fleet MPG: total miles ÷ total gallons (across all jurisdictions).
  4. For each jurisdiction: taxable gallons = miles driven there ÷ fleet MPG. Multiply by that jurisdiction's tax rate, subtract gallons already purchased there.
  5. Sum the result. Owe net tax to your base jurisdiction (South Dakota), receive refund if it's negative.
  6. File at https://dor.sd.gov.
  7. Keep mileage logs, fuel receipts, and the filed return for 4 years.
