Motor Carrier NumberMC Number
FMCSA-issued operating authority allowing a for-hire carrier or broker to transport regulated commodities or arrange transportation in interstate commerce.
An MC Number (Motor Carrier authority) is the operating authority granted by FMCSA. For-hire carriers transporting federally-regulated commodities across state lines need active MC authority. Brokers arranging transportation also need MC authority.
MC authority is separate from a USDOT Number. A new applicant must file form OP-1, file proof of insurance (form BMC-91 or BMC-91X), and designate process agents (form BOC-3) before authority becomes active. Activation usually takes 21–30 days.
Maintaining MC authority requires keeping insurance and BOC-3 filings current. Letting them lapse triggers automatic revocation.
