Hours of Service (HOS) is the set of FMCSA regulations governing how long property-carrying and passenger-carrying commercial drivers can drive and work. The regulations exist to reduce fatigue-related crashes.
For property-carrying drivers, the core US HOS limits are: 11-hour driving limit, 14-hour on-duty window, 10 consecutive hours off duty, 30-minute break after 8 cumulative hours of driving, and a 60-hour / 7-day or 70-hour / 8-day cycle limit.
HOS is recorded automatically by the ELD. Violations show up on the driver's record and can put a carrier out-of-service during a roadside inspection. Drivers can use exceptions like the 16-hour short-haul exception, the adverse driving conditions exception, or the sleeper-berth split.
