Bill of LadingBOL
A legal document between a shipper and carrier listing the type, quantity, and destination of goods being transported.
A Bill of Lading (BOL) is the contract for carriage and the receipt for the goods. The shipper signs it when the truck is loaded, the consignee signs it when the load is delivered, and the carrier keeps it as proof of delivery and proof of contract.
There are several types: straight BOL (delivered to a named consignee, non-negotiable), order BOL (negotiable, can be transferred), and through BOL (covers multiple carriers).
The signed BOL — especially the receiver's signature on delivery — is what brokers and shippers require to release payment. A clean (signed without exceptions) BOL is the carrier's most important paperwork.
